Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE, Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, attended today the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Smart Dubai Office (SDO) and Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC) to safeguard Dubai’s Digital Wealth and implement the Dubai Digital Certificates.

Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of Executive Council His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and Deputy Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum attended the signature ceremony which took place on the sideline of the launch of Digital Wealth Initiative and Internet of Things Strategy.

The two parties aim to secure the city’s data and digital wealth and issue Digital Certificates for key smart-city projects. Smart Dubai has signed an agreement with the Dubai Electronic Security Center (DESC) to secure its services. The agreement seeks to increase the cybersecurity of smart services in Dubai and regulate the issuance of Digital Certificates for key smart-city projects that better equip Dubai’s digital infrastructure for the challenges of the future.

By protecting government and private-sector service providers, the MoU helps ensure the provision of consistent high-quality services, which allows Smart Dubai to uphold its commitment to customer satisfaction, ensuring a seamless flow of information and big data between Smart Dubai, its government partners and its customers.

Her Excellency Dr Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr, Director General of the Smart Dubai Office (SDO), said: “The landmark Dubai Digital Wealth initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, marks the beginning of a new and historic phase in Smart Dubai’s mission. This agreement we’ve signed today is fundamental to implementing HH’s directives to make the Dubai Digital Certificates a foremost tool in maintaining data security and digital wealth in the emirate, which, in turn, is one of the most important tenets of Smart Dubai’s strategic plans to spearhead the emirate’s smart transformation.”

“The seamless and secure flow of information is the bedrock on which all smart-tech strategies are based,” Dr Aisha said. “Smart Dubai’s approach to transforming the emirate into the happiest and smartest city in the world calls for all its government and public-sector partners to cooperate and aim for the highest standards of quality and transparency. This partnership with the Dubai Electronic Security Center amplifies our cybersecurity efforts and allows us to better identify and address challenges, as well as propose solutions.”

Meanwhile, Yousuf Hamad Al Shaibani, Director-General of DESC, said: “Our close cooperation with Smart Dubai provides us with the support we need to fend off cyber-threats and make Dubai the smartest and most secure city from a digital standpoint. Exchanging knowledge and expertise is essential for joint projects, as it enables the participating entities to secure their systems and remain in line with the highest international standards, as well as Dubai’s cyber-security requirements.”

Digital certificates are key to enhancing secure and reliable electronic communication as they help establish and verify identity while using digital communication platforms. Users’ identities are authenticated and encrypted by an electronic key that protects against identity theft. Government and semi-government entities in Dubai will be authorised to issue reliable digital certificates, allowing them to exchange information securely through their digital services, as well as other applications. The Certificates facilitate many other functions, including file encryption and securing communication channels for data exchange.

In the agreement, Smart Dubai and DESC pledge to collaborate and exchange administrative and technical know-how, in addition to harmonising their efforts to achieve Smart Dubai’s goals and objectives, and to outline common ICT-based smart policies, strategies and initiatives.

The MoU outlines procedures to exchange information that is of common interest to joint projects – throughout the planning, implementation and follow-up stages – as well as to regulate the use and reuse of published information, such as cybersecurity standards and smart-tech expertise covering Blockchain, artificial intelligence, big data and other cutting-edge technologies. In addition, the two parties are set to cooperate on joint government projects, including the development and implementation of nation-wide security standards, security audits of electronic service systems and the development of security policies and strategies.]]>

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum:
• The Dubai Digital Certificates and the Dubai IoT Strategy mark the official launch of smart living in the emirate
• The Dubai Digital Certificates are the benchmark against which all smart services in Dubai should be evaluated

HE Dr. Aisha bint Butti bin Bishr:
• We will be unveiling a comprehensive roadmap to guide the implementation of the Data Wealth initiative, the Dubai Digital Certificates and the Dubai IoT Strategy.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched, from Smart Dubai’s headquarters at the Dubai Design District (d3), the flagship Dubai Internet of Things (IoT) Strategy, as well as the Data Wealth initiative to safeguard the emirate’s digital wealth and award the Dubai Digital Certificates to outstanding government and private entities.

The launch took place in the presence of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council; and HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai.

“Dubai’s push to build the future today has helped establish a digital infrastructure that is now a strategic national asset in the wake of the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” said HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid. “It is a fortune that all stakeholders in the Dubai Government must work together to preserve. The Dubai Digital Certificates and the Dubai IoT Strategy mark the official launch of smart living in the emirate and we have directed all government institutions to cooperate and fully implement the initiatives by the year 2021.”

“The Dubai Digital Certificates are the benchmark against which all smart services in Dubai should be evaluated to preserve our Data Wealth,” His Highness further said, as he accepted the first Certificate presented by Her Excellency Dr. Aisha bint Butti Bin Bishr, Director-General of the Smart Dubai Office (SDO).

HE Dr. Aisha said: “We will be unveiling a comprehensive roadmap to guide the implementation of the Data Wealth initiative, the Dubai Digital Certificates and the Dubai IoT Strategy. We are thus setting the foundation for the emirate’s smart digital transformation, and taking another step towards a better life and promising future for our people.”

“Dubai stands out as a preferred destination for business, work and tourism,” Dr Aisha continued, “which has transformed our society into a rich and diverse mix of cultures and nationalities. When we launched Smart Dubai three years ago, we sought to enable people to make use of the vast amounts of data generated every day in one of the busiest cities in the world. Today, as we launch the Dubai IoT Strategy, we provide the people of Dubai with an unmatched smart lifestyle. The Dubai Digital Certificates, on the other hand, safeguard our data wealth and provide greater safety and security. We are committed to working with our government and private-sector partners in Dubai to play our part in the UAE Centennial 2071.”

On a similar note, HE Younus Al Nasser, CEO of the Dubai Data Establishment, said: “A smart city’s achievement in terms of advanced technologies and smart solutions are a digital asset that cannot be fully utilised unless integrated into central data platforms that are consistently updated. The Dubai IoT Strategy unifies the data sources for the Dubai Pulse platform – Dubai’s digital backbone. The Strategy opens new prospects for growth, improving overall efficiency across all sectors and opening up unprecedented economic and social opportunities for people in Dubai. This while the Dubai Digital Certificates ensure that all efforts and initiatives align with the future we want for our city.”

Data Wealth consists of data, data-storing and processing technologies, smart-tech transformation, paperless transaction policies and systems (e.g. Blockchain), digital signature and ID, smart living and clean energy, among other elements. It consists of 121 smart initiatives, 200 databases and 1,129 smart services, and is expected to generate AED33.8 billion in three years’ time, as the Internet of Things reaches AED17.9 billion in value by 2020. Meanwhile, open and shared data is expected to add AED10.4 billion to the GDP by 2021, while Blockchain applications in government departments add AED5.5 billion to the GDP by 2020.

The Dubai IoT Strategy seeks to build the world’s most advanced Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem in the world’s smartest city to improve people’s lives. The strategy aims to protect Dubai’s digital wealth, encourage government departments to join the emirate’s smart transformation, and achieve the objectives of the Smart Dubai Plan 2021 to transition to a 100% paperless government.

The strategy is set to be implemented over four consecutive phases in the coming three years. The first phase centres around coordination of efforts and activities to implement IoT policies across government departments. Second, the Integration and Conversion phase, seeks to harmonise efforts towards implementing the IoT Strategy. After the third Optimisation phase, the strategies will go into the final “Blockchain Journey” stage, which will witness the full integration of IoT policies and the first ROI of the strategy. It covers six strategic domains: governance, management, acceleration, deployment, monetisation and security.

In addition to the Data Wealth initiative, the Certificates and the Dubai IoT Strategy, the Dubai Crowd initiative was also launched. It is the first technical project in the IoT Strategy, which seeks to manage and organise crowds in the emirate during peak seasons to ensure safety and security. Dubai is known for the massive crowds – some of the largest in the world – that flock to the city during high seasons, such as New Year’s Eve. Dubai Crowd analyses real-time data and suggests plausible scenarios for decision makers.

The Dubai IoT Strategy drives the emirate’s smart transformation forward as it strives to digitise more aspects of people’s everyday life, connecting them to the Dubai Pulse platform – the digital backbone of the smart city project. As more decision makers across various sectors gain access to information and insight to support their decision via Dubai Pulse, the strategy drives productivity and efficiency in the city and transforms countless industries, providing the tools everybody needs to drive sustainable change and improvements.]]>

DFM and Nasdaq Dubai sign licence agreement to launch futures on DFM General Index

• Index-linked instruments will be traded on Nasdaq Dubai’s equity futures market in a first of its kind step in the region
• Initiative is milestone to broaden UAE capital markets and increase opportunities for investors

In a first of its kind step in the region, Dubai Financial Market (DFM) and Nasdaq Dubai have signed a licence agreement under which futures contracts linked with the DFM General Index (DFMGI) will be traded on Nasdaq Dubai’s equity futures market. The launch of the index futures is a core element of the exchanges’ joint strategy to offer institutional and retail investors attractive new investment opportunities and a wider range of products.

The DFMGI tracks a basket of leading DFM-listed companies, providing broad exposure to the UAE economy in vibrant sectors including property, banking, telecoms, insurance and transport. It is noteworthy that the DFMGI’s value increased from its base value of 1000 points in 2003 to a historic level of 8485 points in November 2005. The index currently stands at 3660 points.

Nasdaq Dubai will issue the DFMGI futures and they will be traded on the futures market that was launched by Nasdaq Dubai in September 2016. Trading has expanded rapidly on this market, which currently comprises single stock futures on 13 companies including eight that are listed on DFM.

His Excellency Essa Kazim, Chairman of DFM, said: “The diversification of products range and offering new investment opportunities to our enormous investor base is one of the main pillars of DFM’s strategy 2021. In this context, we believe that the launch of futures on the DFMGI will be a milestone in the development of Dubai’s financial landscape, by offering versatile products that are tailored to the needs of international as well as regional investors. This new initiative stems from the unique links between DFM and Nasdaq Dubai that created a favorable framework for various market participants, enabling them to actively participate in Dubai’s capital market. It also further strengthens Dubai’s position as an international capital markets hub.”

DFM will introduce regulated short-selling of equities in coming period. This move will support increased liquidity in both equities and equity futures.

All DFM and Nasdaq Dubai brokers can apply to be Members of the futures market, with access to all eligible individual and institutional investors to trade.

Hamed Ali, Chief Executive of Nasdaq Dubai, said: “The addition of a DFMGI-linked product to Nasdaq Dubai’s equity futures represents a substantial expansion of the market and widens the opportunities for investors who wish to hedge or invest, as well as make gains whether the value of the index is falling or rising. The two exchanges will further increase their cooperation in order to make Dubai a leading international centre for trading and clearing a wide range of equity derivatives.”

In April 2017, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) recognised Nasdaq Dubai as a third-country central counterparty (CCP) under EU regulations. This enables banks based in the EU to apply to become Clearing Members on the exchange, opening the door to international banks and investors playing a growing role in derivatives trading in Dubai.

Since it opened in September 2016, Nasdaq Dubai’s equity futures market has grown from seven leading stocks to 13, all listed on UAE exchanges. The volume of traded contracts rose 80% from 874,000 in the first six months of the market’s operation to reach 1,574,000 in the next six-month period ended August 31, 2017. Currently eight UAE entities are Members of Nasdaq Dubai’s futures market.

Subject to regulatory approval, trading of DFMGI futures is expected to begin later this year with the support of leading UAE brokers, targeted at professional and institutional investors to enable them to take a macro view on the DFM market.

Nasdaq Dubai last week announced a licence agreement with MSCI under which the exchange will use MSCI’s regional indices to create derivative products to be traded on Nasdaq Dubai’s derivatives platform. The exchange initially plans to develop futures contracts based on the MSCI UAE index, which is widely tracked by international institutional investors.]]>

Monday, October 23, 2017 — In October 2007, Emirates became the first airline to link Brazil and the Gulf region with non-stop flights between Sao Paulo and Dubai. Now serving the two main cities in Brazil daily – São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro –Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, has carried over 2 million passengers in 10 years of service to Brazil. The number of passengers carried annually in Emirates’ first year of operations – over 26,000 in 2007—has grown to over 288,000 passengers in 2016.

In 2012, Emirates expanded its presence in Brazil by adding a daily service between Dubai and Rio de Janeiro. Underlining its commitment to the Brazilian market, Emirates started to operate the first ever scheduled commercial Airbus A380 flight to South America in March this year. The switch to the A380 offers a total of 959 additional seats per week in each direction meeting a growing demand from travellers on the route. The most travelled destinations from Brazilian passengers over the last few years have been Dubai, Bangkok, Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

According to Brazil's Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services, Brazilian exports to the UAE grew 87% (US$1.2bn to US$2.24bn) and overall trade grew 72% (US$1.5bn to US$2.6bn) between 2007 and 2016. The UAE is the second biggest importer of Brazilian products among Arab countries, with imports worth US$2.24 billion in 2016. This amount represents almost 40% of all Brazilian exports to the GCC countries, of which food produce and products formed a major component. The UAE in particular is an active trader with Brazil, with two-way trade reaching US$2.6 billion last year. The vast majority of this trade was exports from Brazil, leaving a significant trade balance of US$1.9 billion in favour of Brazil.

Emirates SkyCargo has also played an important role in connecting Brazil to the world, carrying more than 25,000 tons of imported cargo and more than 11,000 tons of exported cargo between Dubai and Brazil since 2007. Currently, major cargo imports include automobile and aircraft spare parts, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Major exports include general cargo, hatching eggs, spare parts, shoes, fruits & vegetables. Top export destinations include United Arab Emirates, India and Saudi Arabia; main import origins are Hong Kong, India and China. Commenting on the milestone, Hubert Frach, Divisional Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations West at Emirates, said: “The 10-year anniversary is a significant milestone for Emirates in Brazil, celebrating our first touch point in Latin America. Over the years, we have achieved healthy growth on our Brazilian flights, as more and more customers experience Emirates’ award-winning service and our hub, Dubai. We are continuously bringing new exciting leisure destinations closer to Brazilians such as, Bangkok, Tokyo, Vietnam or more recently Cambodia. We look forward to continue supporting Brazil’s growing inbound tourist numbers and business trade opportunities”.

Mohammed Abdul Aziz Al Mannai, Executive Director, Mina Rashid, said: “We’re expanding our facilities to accommodate more ships by adding new berths, while developing our existing two-kilometre long berths, in line with the demand from cruise operators. We’re also working on connecting our existing terminals with closed corridors equipped with the best in technology to maximise capacity and provide ease of access for passengers across the port.

Mina Rashid is the Middle East’s leading cruise port, playing a vital role as a hub for tourists looking to explore this region and has the capacity to anchor seven ocean-sailing cruise vessels at a time. The port also added a luxury yacht marina facility in response to the high demand from luxury yacht owners from around the world, and offers world class mooring and storage space and other associated services.”
