Emirates to receive 100th A380 aircraft in November

Emirates, the world’s largest A380 operator, is set to receive its milestone 100th A380 aircraft on 3rd November.

Over 80 million passengers have flown on the superjumbo in the nine years since it first joined Emirates’ modern fleet. Today, Emirates flies the A380 to over 45 destinations spanning Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas. Everywhere it operates, the Emirates A380 attracts consumer demand for its industry-leading inflight experience in all cabin classes, and is welcomed by local economies as a contributor to tourism and visitor growth.

Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline said: “The A380 has been, and continues to be hugely popular amongst our customers, many of whom deliberately plan their travel so that they can fly on it. But we don’t rest on our laurels and continually invest to enhance our product so as to continue offering our customers the best possible inflight experience.

“Our frequent flyers will have noticed countless improvements onboard over the years, ranging from minor updates such as the addition of in-seat USB and HDMI ports, to bigger cabin overhauls where for instance we relocated the central overhead luggage bins to create more spacious cabin on the upper deck, and when we introduced bigger and better inflight entertainment systems, amongst many other initiatives.”

On the ground, Emirates had also worked closely with stakeholders to launch and operate an A380-dedicated airport concourse with 20 gates offering direct boarding from the airport lounge, and one of the world’s most advanced engineering centres which include six heavy maintenance hangars, paint shops, and the capability to completely overhaul an A380.

Industry firsts and continual innovation

With its inaugural A380 flight in 2008, Emirates introduced several industry firsts including its iconic A380 Onboard Lounge and First Class Shower spa.

The Onboard Lounge remains one of the biggest draws of the aircraft to date, and is arguably the most popular spot at 40,000 feet. It has gone through several successive and subtle changes, such as the introduction of electric window blinds, before a brand new look was unveiled last July.

The latest makeover of the Onboard Lounge, inspired by private yacht cabins, features a more intimate and social area for up to 26 guests. The lounge now has a larger 55 inch LCD screen with surround sound speakers giving customers the latest flight information, or live TV broadcasts of the latest news or sports updates.

The First Class Shower spa, catering exclusively for the 14 passengers travelling in Emirates’ First Class private suites, continue to generate as much curiosity and buzz today as when first launched. Since Emirates blazed a trial for the ultimate shower spa experience, only one other commercial airline has offered a similar facility in the sky. With nearly 100 A380s in its fleet, safe to say that if anyone is taking a shower at 40,000 feet, chances are it’s on an Emirates A380.

With its many thoughtful design touches including a heated floor, shower timer, a hairdryer, and spa products, Emirates’ Onboard Shower spa remains the standard to beat for inflight luxury. The airline recently introduced sustainable VOYA spa products and exclusively-developed moisturizing pyjamas, allowing customers to arrive at their destination refreshed.

Inflight entertainment

Emirates’ award-winning inflight entertainment system, ice, has also been constantly updated to provide customers with more choices for on demand entertainment as well as improvements to the viewing experience. While the equipment has become smaller, media capacity has only expanded and Emirates now provides more than double the entertainment with 2,500 channels of blockbuster movies, TV box sets, music and documentaries.

In addition to choice, Emirates has invested close to US $1 billion on hardware to provide a more comfortable viewing experience. Over the years, in-seat screens have been made larger across all classes. The screen in First Class has increased from 27 inches to 32 inches, the screens in Business Class from 17 inches to 20 inches, while screens on the latest A380 aircraft offer the industry’s largest in Economy at 13.3 inches from its original 10 inch screen. Little touches have also been introduced including USB ports for power and data in each seat as well as HDMI ports in premium classes to connect personal devices to the ice screen.

The entire A380 fleet has also been fitted with connectivity to allow for free 20mb of Wi-Fi throughout the cabin. In June last year, the first A380 was fitted with Live TV allowing passengers to watch news and sports matches live on board.

Extended capability

Since 2008, the efficient A380 aircraft has been further enhanced to operate even longer routes. This had enabled Emirates to add more destinations to its A380 network, including the world’s longest A380 flight - a non-stop Dubai-Auckland service introduced in March 2016.

Today, the Emirates A380 reaches all ends of the globe with non-stop flights to Sao Paulo, Casablanca, Copenhagen, Tokyo and Los Angeles from Dubai.

Emirates also introduced the world’s first 2-class configured A380 in November 2015, making it the highest-capacity plane in the world with 615 seats on board while retaining the airline’s signature inflight services and comfort.

DEWA organises 3rd ERM conference in cooperation with UK’s IRM

HE Saeed Mohammed al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has today inaugurated the 3rd Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) conference. DEWA organised the conference under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai, and in partnership with the Institute of Risk Management (IRM) in the UK.

The ERM conference was held at Atlantis, The Palm hotel in Dubai, and was attended by HE Yousuf Hamad Al Shaibani, CEO of Dubai Electronic Security Centre; HE Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), and over 500 experts and specialists in cyber security and risk management from the public and private sectors.

Speakers at the conference included Jamie Woodruff, one of the world’s leading authorities on cyber security and a prominent ‘ethical’ hacker in Europe; Christopher Gardner, one of the world's leading speakers of leadership and motivation in risk management; and Dr. Tommy Weir, a bestselling author and inspiring speaker about strategic leadership for the future. The conference discussed mechanisms and ways to achieve organisational strategic objectives by adopting an effective proactive approach to identify, assess, and prioritise risks and define priorities.

In his keynote speech, Al Tayer noted that the 3rd ERM conference builds on the success of the last two conferences and the positive feedback from participants.

“This year’s conference’s theme is ‘Risk and Cyber Security 2017,’ which is especially important considering the increasing challenges and threats resulting from rapid technological advances, and the accelerated developments in smart transformation. Cyber security has become a key requirement for smart cities. And organising this conference in Dubai emphasises the UAE’s leadership in consolidating cyber security, to keep up with the widespread use of smart technologies and their accompanying risks,” said Al Tayer.

“In May, thousands of organisations worldwide were infected with ransom malware, which encrypted data and demanded a ransom to unlock it. Hypothetical cloud-service attack scenarios by Lloyd’s, a global insurance market leader, and Cyence, a cyber-risk analytics platform, estimate that the average losses caused by such a disruption could range from USD4.6 billion to USD53 billion, but actual losses could be as high as USD121 billion,” added Al Tayer.

Al Tayer noted that the Computer Emergency Readiness Team in the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in the UAE foiled 561 cyberattacks during the first half of 2017. This included 284 attacks on government and semi-government websites, and 277 attacks on private-sector websites. Attacks during this period accounted for 53% of the total attacks in 2016, reflecting the high frequency of hacking attempts on public and private websites. That’s why this conference is an important platform to learn about the latest developments, technologies, and best practices in cyber security from prominent experts and specialists.

“His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said that, “Every challenge is an opportunity for learning, a chance to test our capabilities and knowledge.” With this concept in mind, DEWA launched its security strategy 2021 in line with the Dubai Cyber Security Strategy, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, last May. The strategy provides integrated protection against the dangers of cyberspace and supports innovation in cyberspace. This in turn, supports the growth of Dubai and its economic prosperity, and strengthens the Emirate’s position as a world leader in innovation, safety, security, and excellence,” said Al Tayer.

Al Tayer noted that DEWA has made significant advances in the systematic and effective development of its enterprise risk management strategy. DEWA is the first organisation in the Middle East to apply SAP Risk Management 10.1. It adopts the best ISO31000-certified international practices. DEWA has received the ISO22301 Business Continuity Management certification, becoming the first utility in the Middle East and North Africa to do so for its integrated operations. DEWA has also received many prestigious awards and certificates, including the 7th Middle East Municipalities and Smart Cities Excellence Award from the Middle East Excellence Awards Institute, for Risk and Crisis Management Excellence. DEWA also won the Cyber Risk Strategy of the Year award at the Global Risk Management Awards 2016.

“While DEWA contributes to achieving the goals of the Smart Dubai initiative to transform Dubai into the smartest and happiest city in the world, and dedicates its efforts to making Dubai a model for smart cities, we are committed to sharing our best practices and knowledge with all partners and stakeholders from the government and private sectors in the UAE. This ensures improving work performance and enhances sound planning to achieve strategic objectives. Our common goal is to achieve the highest levels of excellence and quality, and harness capabilities to develop government work and improve its outcome to serve the people, and make them happier. I am confident that this conference will play an important role in achieving these goals, and will be an important addition to the government’s efforts to provide a secure cyberspace for users and strengthen safety and security in society,” concluded Al Tayer]]>

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has approved the federal Cabinet reshuffle, which was unveiled earlier this afternoon by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The new cabinet is tasked with making the UAE the world’s best prepared for artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies.

“The new government will catapult the UAE into its prosperous centenary which aims for fostering knowledge, science and research as well as engaging the youth in the leadership of the nation,” Sheikh Mohammad said

Sheikh Mohammad tweeted that a new shake-up came after the government’s recent annual meetings and the launch of the UAE Centennial Plan 2071.

“The reshuffle was approved by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and came after consultation with “my brother [His Highness Sheikh] Mohammed Bin Zayed [Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces],” Sheikh Mohammad said.

The new government — the 13th in the UAE’s history — sees the appointment of Omar Bin Sultan Al Olama, 27, as the State Minister for Artificial Intelligence.

“We want the UAE to become the world’s most prepared country for artificial intelligence,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

Sheikh Mohammed added the new phase focuses on “future skills, future sciences and future technology, as we prepare for the centenary to ensure a better future for our generations”.

Six new ministers were appointed, including three women.
The new Cabinet is made up of 31 ministers, including nine women. So, the representation of women in the Cabinet was boosted to 29 per cent.

Sheikh Mohammed also announced that Ahmed Abdullah Humaid Bel Houl Al Falasi, Minister of State for Higher Education, will be tasked with the portfolio of Advanced Skills.

“My brother Ahmed [Bel Houl] is in charge of imbuing national talent with the skills of the future. Advanced technology will create new jobs and make half of existing jobs redundant within just 10 years.

“We have also charged my brother Ahmed Bel Houl with heading the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources to make sure our national talent are ready and armed with the advanced skills of the future.”

Sara Al Amiri, 30, has been appointed the Minister of State for Advanced Sciences. “Sara will be in charge of R&D or research and development and building capable scientists. Sara also heads the UAE Council of Scientists and the nation’s Mars Mission. We want hundreds of models like Sara to contribute to the future of the UAE,” Sheikh Mohammad said.

Sheikh Mohammed announced the appointment of Mariam Al Muhairi as the Minister of State for Future Food Security of our Nation, with respect to research, planning, and technology.

“Food security is a national issue of the future, necessitating research, knowledge, and projects. Our faith in our youth is high,” Sheikh Mohammad said.

Sheikh Mohammed said: “We also announce the appointment of Nasser Bin Thani Al Hameli as the Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation. We are still slow in the Emiratisation drive and Nasser faces a large task.

“We also announce the appointment of Hessa Bint Eisa Bu Humaid as the Minister of Community Development. The Emirati household is our biggest bet for the cohesion of society. My wishes for Hessa’s success,” Sheikh Mohammad said.

Sheikh Mohammed appointed “my brother Nahyan Bin Mubarak [Al Nahyan] as the Minister of Tolerance. Brother Nahyan is an Emirati face recognised both on the Arab level and internationally. He is a significant credit to UAE soft power,” Sheikh Mohammad said.

“Brother Nahyan Bin Mubarak, with his extensive social credit and wide-reaching international connections, commands the admiration of all segments of society, and no one is more suited to instill the value of tolerance in the UAE and the region,” he added.

Sheikh Mohammed also announced the appointment of Noora Mohammad Al Kaabi as the Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development. “With her experience in both culture and the media, she will aptly continue brother Nahyan’s journey in the ministry,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

“We also announce the appointment of brother Zaki Nussaibah as the Minister of State. He was a companion of Sheikh Zayed, contemporary to his journey, and he contributed valiantly to the development of the nation,” Sheikh Mohammad said.

Sheikh Mohammed said the Minister of Energy will also be responsible for Industry, so that “brother Suhail [Mohammed Faraj] Al Mazroui will now be responsible for developing industries, especially technologically advanced ones, in the UAE”.

“We also announce that responsibilities of the Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs will be added to the current responsibilities of brother Abdul Rahman [Mohammad] Al Owais. Our wishes for his success in his national duties,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

“We also announce the appointment of Abdullah Mohammed Bin Toq as the Secretary General of the Cabinet. Abdullah is a graduate of leadership programmes and an active member of my team.”

In March, the UAE Centennial Plan 2071 was launched to make the UAE the best country in the world.

It is a comprehensive government plan that encompasses a national strategy to strengthen the country’s reputation and soft power; ensure that government revenue is diversified, relying less on oil; introduce education programmes focused on advanced information technology and engineering; and consistently build Emirati values and ethics for future generations. Enhancing the productivity of the national economy and enhancing community cohesion are also important aspects of the project.

The Dubai Free Zones Council and the Federal Tax Authority organized an informative workshop on value-added tax that will be implemented in the UAE starting from 2018. The event drew the participation of more than 70 representatives of companies operating across Dubai’s various free zones.

With the aim of helping free zone entities fulfill their tax obligations, the workshop provided a comprehensive overview of VAT and related mechanisms, the implementation timeline, products and services it will cover, as well as tax-exempt sectors. The session clarified the impact of the new tax law on activities such as bookkeeping as well as on the preparation of invoices and other financial documents.

Dr Mohammed Alzarooni, Secretary General of the Dubai Free Zones Council, stressed the importance of the workshop for enabling entities operating in the free zones to prepare for full compliance with the new tax legislation.

He said: “Companies must take timely and effective measures to adapt their operations, financial management and information systems to the new tax environment. The necessary changes are also set to impact professional capacities – accountants will need additional training, and the job market may even see a surge in tax adviser vacancies.”

Dr Alzarooni noted that Dubai’s free zones have become a force to reckon with in the local and international economic arena, and currently contribute a significant 33 percent to the emirate’s GDP – on a par with global standards. Nearly 39 percent of this contribution is generated by the emirate’s exports. In addition, free zones play a critical role in attracting foreign direct investment.

The 24 free zones in Dubai host over 30,000 companies with 330,000 employees. Meanwhile, the wider UAE is home to 40 free zones – the highest number in the region, representing about 25 percent of all free zones in Arab countries worldwide.

During the event, held at the Etihad Museum under the theme ‘Through Space we Flourish’, Sheikh Abdullah said that Arab and Muslim ideas have inspired others, and their contributions were often the starting point for the work of other major inventors in history.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed also highlighted the scientific and technological breakthroughs in the last ten years, mainly in the information technology sector, which paved the way to the creation of social media and artificial intelligence, and enhanced the development of virtual reality and 3D printing, among other new technological tools. He also said that the idea of the ‘spirit of the century’ put forward by many philosophers and thinkers simply means that every century has its own scientific, social, political, economic and cultural character. People who have been successful and influential are those that have understood the spirit of their century; while those who lived in the past have tried to impose it on the present and always failed.

Sheikh Abdullah also said that while it is important to draw lessons from the past, it is also vital to focus on the future. Science is the spirit of our century, he said, adding that humanity is on the threshold of a major leap forward amid the growing interest in science and space technology.

Sheikh Hamdan and Sheikh Abdullah also attended various sessions that were organised on the sidelines of the event. One of the sessions they attended was a presentation by HE Sarah Amiri, Minister of State for Advanced Sciences and Deputy Project Manager, Science Lead of the Emirates Mars Mission gave an overview of the scientific objectives of the project, explaining how the Hope Probe will study the atmosphere of Mars that lies thousands of kilometers away.

Amiri stated that the Hope Probe mission will investigate why the Mars atmosphere is losing hydrogen and oxygen gases, and what the connection is between the lower and upper atmospheres of Mars. She also highlighted the main features of the three scientific instruments used in the probe and why they were selected and what data they would collect and transmit to Earth.

Amiri shared information on how the probe will manoeuvre into Mars’ wide elliptic orbit, between 22,000 and 44,000 km away from the Martian surface, enabling us to provide the first global picture of how the Martian atmosphere changes throughout the day, and between seasons. Amiri added: "One of the most important goals of the Hope mission is to build a generation of national experts in different areas of science. The project includes initiatives aimed at raising students’ awareness about the work environment in scientific research, in addition to workshops on space and planetary science. It currently includes a group of researchers and scientists who work on a knowledge transfer programme, sharing their knowledge on scientific analysis methods."

The Science Event is a proactive initiative by MBRSC, consisting of a variety of scientific and technological workshops and activities to nurture the culture of research and exploration in the UAE. The event, which reflects the Centre’s strategic objectives for developing national capabilities in science, space and advanced technology, played host to nearly 36 local and international researchers and experts in space, science and technology.

The MBRSC Science Event includes 29 lectures, discussion panels and sessions covering various topics related to space research and technology, as well as awareness activities to promote a culture of research, development and exploration. The event was attended by more than 800 university and school students, teachers, professors, researchers, and members of the public with an interest in science and space.

There were 31 speakers from MBRSC, the academic sector and scientific community who presented research and scientific papers on various aspects of space science and technology, in addition to sharing their scientific and engineering expertise in various UAE space missions and programmes. These included the Emirates Mars Mission - Hope mission, KhalifaSat, the Mars 2117 Program, and the NanoSatellite Outreach Program (NSOP).

The Centre also showcased an experiment on planting vegetable seeds in Martian sand simulant. The experiment is aimed at monitoring growth and production rates and comparing it with production rates and times on Earth. Students received planters with seeds, fertilizer, and Martian simulant to conduct this experiment in their homes. They will document and share their results with the Centre’s team through reports and pictures. This test was a continuation to the Mars Simulation Program.
